Shri Lekh Raj Mehta

A Symbol of Determination

Shri Lekh Raj Mehta son of Late Shri Gaj Raj Mehta was born on 4^th June, 1921 in Jalore, District Jodhpur. He is originally from Lambia, a village as situated in Pali District. His father shifted to Jodhpur in late 18^th century and was working as Daroga in Jodhpur State; he had a good astrological sense and understanding. He predicted much earlier that his son will achieve heights in the field of law and following that predication and further looking into his keenness towards studies, he sent him for his higher education outside Jodhpur. Lekh Raj Mehta did his Bachelors of law from Benaras Hindu University in 1942 and then went on for doing his masters in law from Lucknow University in 1945.

He is the first Masters of Law in the State of Rajasthan and probably in the northern India. He started practicing law prior to Independence and also joined the Jai Narain Vyas University as a part time Lecturer. After attending Court, he use to go regularly to the University for teaching law. He taught as a lecturer in the University for a period of 35 years. Many of his students in the university became High Court and Supreme Court judges, Politicians and also went into Indian administrative services. To name a few, Retd Chief Justice RM Lodha, Justice Dalveer Bhandari, Justice Ashok Mathur, Shri LM Singhvi, Shri Ashok Gehlot and many more have been his students in law. 

He is legal luminary, academician, vivid reader and a great orator. He has a tremendously rich experience of more than 80 years and just before Covid had been actively participating in Court proceedings and regularly advising his valued clients. During the days of pandemic, he also appeared in the Court through Video conferencing and is always keen to learn new things. He has been involved in numerous legal matters involving complex legal issues; he has been instrumental in various landmark judgments of this country which have been widely reported in law journals. He has appeared for various Companies, Institutions, Government departments, Politicians, Religious trusts and erstwhile rulers etc. He has done a lot of pro bono work and given free legal advices to huge section of the society. He keenly follows and practices Jainism while respecting all the other religious beliefs. He starts his day by visiting Temple and doing pooja, which he has been doing invariably since last 60 years.

He has delivered numerous lectures on subjects of law and religion in various parts of country and also in Russia and England. He has participated in various legal seminars and have arranged moot court competitions and law debates for law students within the Country. He has been awarded and recognized with number of awards and accolades. He was also awarded with highest recognition known as “Hathi Sropav” by Jodhpur Royal family and was conferred with Citizens Honour award by Jodhpur Administration, Pride of Marwar by Times of India.

He started the law firm called Mehta Chambers as a family run traditional law office in the year 1945 in Jodhpur. The said law practice was taken over by his son Mr Rajendra Mehta who was a Chartered Accountant turned Lawyer, a Gold medalist in law.

He himself was a well known legal and intellectual genius, who ventured additionally into the field of corporate, taxation and company laws, and took the law practice to further heights. Now since 2004 the law practice of this high repute has been modestly carried forward by his grandson Mr Ramit Mehta who is a rank holder in Bcom and Law and also stood in the merit list with distinction in Masters of Law (LLM) from world renowned University of Warwick, UK.
